The university sector offers high-level education for many community sector areas. Studies may be available internally (faceto-face delivery) and/or externally (distance and online learning). Some university studies can be applied to multiple fields of employment.
Education options include undergraduate programs (university diplomas, bachelor degrees) and post-graduate qualifications (including graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, masters degrees or doctorates). Interested parties are encouraged to submit enquiries to individual universities.
Some universities offer double degrees which allow students to specialise in one or more areas. This assists the student to tailor a qualification for a specialised career. Commonly linked awards in a double degree include law, education or business degrees.
Queensland universities offer a wide range of study options in many areas of the community and human services sector. Those interested in university studies, particularly at postgraduate level, may also wish to explore programs available externally through non-Queensland-based universities.
Courses available by distance or online usually require the student to have a block of university contact time each semester. A number of university courses require a practice placement within the field (government or community sector) at some stage of the course in order to give the student an experience of working in the human services sector and to assess their performance in practice. The time commitment associated with block contact time and field placement requirements are a consideration for students who have other regular commitments.
Common university study themes include:
- arts
- behaviour management/behavioural studies/behavioural science
- communication
- community welfare
- counselling
- criminal justice
- human services
- indigenous studies
- philosophy
- politics and international relations
- psychology
- social science
- social work, and
- miscellaneous specialty courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
