Have high energy bills
Information on saving energy is available from a number of sources.
The Queensland Electricity Industry Code requires that retailers provide general information about how to reduce electricity costs, on request and free of charge. They are also required to provide advice on the typical running costs of major domestic appliances.
There are a number of websites that provide energy efficiency information. The Climate Smart Living website contains a range of tips on reducing energy usage in the home. Many retailer websites also contain information on saving energy.
Queensland Mines and Energy has developed an EnergyWise calculator which estimates the monthly running cost of household appliances.
The Queensland Government is currently offering an energy audit service to assist Queenslanders to identify ways they can save energy. The ClimateSmart Home Service includes an energy audit by a licensed electrician, installation of a wireless monitor, supply and installation of an energy efficient shower head and up to 15 compact fluorescent light bulbs, an energy and water efficiency plan, and access to a customised online resource. The service costs $50, however Brisbane City Council is offering a rebate to local residents to cover this cost. For more information, see the ClimateSmart Home Service website.
High energy bills may also result when bills have been estimated because the meter could not be accessed, or from a gas leak or faulty meter. For more information see the Energy Ombudsman Queensland website.
